Job Title: School Nutrition Manager Trainee

 

Qualifications:  High School Diploma or Equivalent; Demonstrated aptitude, competence, and experience for assigned responsibilities.  Successful completion of the MGSD School Nutrition Manager Trainee Program.

 

Reports to: Directly - School Nutrition Manager; Indirectly – School Nutrition Director & Training Manager

 

Supervises:  School Nutrition Staff

 

Purpose of Position:  Under the direction of the School Nutrition Manager, SN Director and Training Manager learn to provide leadership in the preparation and serving of high-quality nutritious meals in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness and friendliness while maintaining necessary reports and records and perform related work as required.

 

To prove leadership in the preparation and serving of quality nutritious meals in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness, and friendliness.

 

This position will be a roaming position and will work as the need arises at any of the school locations.  The manager trainee will be enrolled in a 2 year Manager Trainee Program.  The expectation will be that the manager trainee will fill in for temporarily vacant asssitant manager and manager positions.  They will be required to apply and interview for all manager and assistant manager positions as they become available.

 

Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations: 

Under direct supervision of the School Nutrition Manager, Director or Training Manager employee shall learn to:

 

  • Supervise the production and serving of quality meals for students and staff
  • Function as acting manager or assistant manager at any school in the event a manager or assistant manager is absent.
  • When a manager or assistant manager position becomes available, there is a requirement to apply for the position.
  • Maintain accurate financial records as prescribed by the School Nutrition director and finance officer
  • Maintain accurate employee time records
  • Assume responsibility for the security of food and supplies
  • Ensure that menus are followed
  • Assist in the preparation of food portions and prepares serving lines
  • Follow sanitation and HACCP procedures in the cafeteria
  • Plan work schedules, and arranges for substitutes when required
  • Provide assistance to the School Nutrition director in training staff; Willingness to train others
  • Complete Serv-Safe or similar Course
  • Available to work extra hours when necessary for training purposes
  • Ensure daily cleaning of serving lines, tables, furnishings and makes sure the cafeteria areas are maintained in a neat and sanitary condition
  • Offer recommendations for improvement of the cafeteria operation to the School Nutrition Manager
  • Assist the manager in storing and inventorying food and supplies in the cafeteria
  • Prepare daily food portions according to the approved menu using standardized recipes
  • Provide a friendly atmosphere for students, faculty, and guests by showing politeness and good manners while dealing with others
  • Assist in recording all foods (and their temperatures) used to prepare daily meals
  • Read menus, work schedules, and recipes ahead of time and makes preparations for upcoming meals
  • Work well under pressure and time constraints. Completes job in time allotted.
  • Make sure that all eating utensils, trays, pots, and pans are clean, sanitized and stored properly
  • Assist with the daily cleaning of counters, tables, food equipment, floors, and walls, and furnishings in the kitchen and dining area.
  • Serve as cashier as directed by the manager
  • Collect money for school meals as needed
  • Complete end of day transactions
  • Attend monthly manager trainee meetings
  • Attend and provide in-service and professional development training as scheduled
  • Backup for the office when needed (answering phones, helping with breakfast, taking payments, etc.)
  • All other duties as assigned by the School Nutrition Manager and Director

Physical Ability: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. The ability to be a safe food handler, free of diseases that may be transmitted by food is an absolute necessity. The employee is occasionally required to transfer extremely hot and heavy food pans from the preparation equipment to serving area. The employee must regularly be able to lift or move 25 – 50 pounds. The selected candidate must be able to perform the duties of a rigorous work schedule which includes lifting, loading, and unloading, and pass a physical examination and drug screen certifying this ability.

 

Working Conditions: School Nutrition employees may be exposed to extremely hot/humid and cold temperatures: either while cooking or storing and retrieving items from the freezer. This job requires lifting, pushing, pulling moderately heavy and bulky items: Exposure to loud noises, Extended periods of standing.

 

Evaluation and Measurement of Performance: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Support Services Personnel.

 

Terms of Employment:  10-month position; Hourly salary and work schedule to be established by administration.
