In-School Suspension (ISS) Coordinator

 

Qualifications:  High School Diploma, Associates Degree preferred. 

 

Special Considerations: The position is responsible for providing a supervised and structured environment for students assigned to the in-school suspension program within a school. The position works with classroom teachers to coordinate the academic activities of suspended students and provides assistance to students in completing the assigned work. Position monitors students and maintains a safe and orderly environment within the in-school suspension classroom

 

Reports to:  School Administration (Principal and Assistant Principals)

Supervises:  All students within the school environment.

 

Purpose of Position:

  • To assist in creating and maintaining a safe and nurturing classroom environment where every student has a sense of belonging and is challenged to think critically about real-world issues as it relates to the NC Essential Standards within the Common Core Curriculum.  
  • To assist in ensuring that students are provided the equal opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills necessary to be promoted to the next grade level and earn a high school diploma.  
  • To establish healthy and appropriate relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the community in order to facilitate success for all students.  
  • To stay abreast of current trends in education to best meet the needs of all students and prepare them for a successful future in an ever-evolving technological world.

 

Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations:  

  1. Enforces adherence to established rules and regulations of the in-school suspension program and creates an effective climate for learning. 
  2. Serves as a liaison between the classroom teacher and students assigned to the program to obtain and return the student’s daily class work and homework. 
  3. Assists students assigned to the program with completing their regular classroom assignments. 
  4. Assigns additional work as needed that is pertinent to the offense that resulted in being assigned to in-school suspension. 
  5. Communicates appropriate behavior, school rules, and regulations to students in the program; and explains to students the reasons for suspension and its impact on their education. 
  6. Guides and encourages students to develop a positive attitude toward learning. 
  7. Monitors students who have been assigned to in-school suspension and reviews student progress. 
  8. Communicates with parents and classroom teachers regarding student behavior and progress. 
  9. Reports inappropriate behavior by students to the appropriate administrator. 
  10. Escorts students during break/lunch periods and monitors hallways. 
  11. Maintains daily attendance and other records of students assigned to the program. 
  12. Reports the effectiveness of the program to the school administrative staff and makes suggestions for improvement. 
  13. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  14. Participates in appropriate training and meetings, as assigned
  15. Alerts the teacher(s) or Administrator(s) to any problems or special information about individual students
  16. Performs all other duties as assigned by the school administration

 

Evaluation and Measurement of Performance:  Classified Evaluation Form – Instructional Staff

 

Term of Employment:  Ten Months; full benefits package offered with full-time employment.
